Kenny Miller: Livingston hope to announce new player-manager
Livingston hope to announce former Rangers striker Kenny Miller as their new player-manager within the next 48 hours, BBC Scotland has learned.
Miller, 38, will meet the West Lothian club's board on Monday to finalise the deal, with a two-year contract on the table.
He left Rangers after his contract came to an end this summer.
David Hopkin, 47, left Livi after guiding them to the Premiership via the play-offs.
They beat Partick Thistle in the play-off final and will start season 2018-19 with League Cup first-round group matches against Airdrieonians, Hamilton Academical, Annan Athletic and Berwick Rangers in July.
Livingston's opening Premiership fixture will be against champions Celtic, where Miller spent one season as a player, on 4 August.
The striker has made more than 700 club appearances across spells in Scotland, England, Wales, Turkey and Canada and won 69 Scotland caps, scoring 18 international goals.
Another former Scotland player, Gary Holt, has also been linked with the Livi vacancy, having previously been in charge of Falkirk.

Kiwi UFC fighter to share Māori culture on global stage
Kiwi UFC featherweight Shane Young has battled with a variety of adversaries over the past 12 months, the least of which have come inside the Octagon.
The 24-year-old was literally called from his couch to debut in the world's premier mixed martial arts promotion last November, a welcome opportunity that came at a rather inopportune time.
"I was in a weird space at the time," Young told Newshub. "I went through a period of change, especially with my Māori culture.
"I was really anti it for a couple of years and I didn’t realise I was, until I'd reimmersed myself in it.
"I can't believe all I would think about was the stats of Māori, and not think about the people and beautiful places that I came from, which was really strange."
Spurred on by his girlfriend, who is also of mixed race, Young underwent a cultural reawakening, reconnecting with his Māori heritage and embracing his ancestry wholeheartedly.
"When she spoke Māori, it just inspired me," Young recalled.
"She taught me not to be whakamā about even just trying to speak it. Sometimes, you don’t want other people thinking you're being a try-hard."
The culmination of such lessons will come to bear in Singapore on Sunday night (NZ time).
Young will proudly fly the Tino rangatiratanga flag - a symbol of Māori sovereignty - as he makes his entrance to the Octagon, the first fighter ever to do so on MMA's biggest stage.
"I finally got it approved by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, so it's coming over with my coach," said Young.
"I want to do it for my community and where I'm from. I want to be an inspiration to them.
"It also helps me and gives me mana. My ancestors were warriors, fighting to the death in battle.
"I'll talk about it and I'll say Māori words, and it gives me goosebumps. You can't fake that stuff, it gives you power."
The seed was planted when Young saw Australia's Tai Tuivasa take to the Octagon at UFC 225 in Chicago, holding the Aboriginal flag aloft.
"Talking to him about the Aboriginal culture just reaffirmed it for me.
"Carrying a flag doesn’t seem like a huge thing, but when I saw the support and how it inspired people, I realised how big a deal it was."
But 'Sugar' isn't done there.
Should his hand be raised in victory following his bout with Filipino Rolando Dy, Young intends to conduct part of the post-fight interview in Māori, in front of 12,000 in attendance and a massive global television audience.
It's a chance for Young to put into practice what he's learnt at the Te Reo classes he's been frequenting.
"Some people don’t even know there are free lessons," Young noted. "Even if I could just tell them, that could motivate maybe five people to try them out.
"I hope it inspires other UFC fighters to share in their culture, not just Māori."
Of course, he needs to get past Dy (9-6) first.
The limitations of an eight-day preparation were clear to see that November night in Sydney, against rising Australian featherweight Alexander Volkanovski. Young admits he may have fallen victim to distraction.
"I was focussing on fighting, but I was thinking 'I know the UFC is going to come', but for now, I'm just concentrating on me. I wasn't training as much.
"I felt like I did really well in the fight straight afterwards, I was on this mean buzz. Then I watched it and compared it to all my others fights, and it's my worst-ever performance."
A few days' reflection helped Young (11-4) realise that, despite the unanimous-decision loss, he was far from out of his depth.
Now with the benefit of fulltime training at City Kickboxing, NZ's unofficial combat headquarters, he's sharpening his steel against the likes of UFC fighters Dan Hooker and Israel Adesanya on a daily basis.
His intentions against Dy are clear and concise – to embrace the contest and express himself.
"I really want to put this boy down," Young says emphatically. "I want to showcase my skills, show the fighter that I am.
"Fighting is the truest form of expression. At those highest levels, part of your personality gets let out.
"I'm going to show the person that I am, the mana that I hold and carry my people with me."
Experts say psychological impact of family separation on par with abuse
There’s a vivid term mental health experts use to describe the destruction of the love of life in another human being, especially in a child: It's called “soul murder.” It can happen as a result of physical abuse, they say, but just as easily, as a result of psychological violence, including when children are separated from their parents.
“Two of the most damaging childhood adversities are loss of the attachment bond with the parents and childhood physical and sexual abuse,” University of Texas psychiatry professor Luis Zayas told ABC News. “If you want to damage someone permanently, expose him or her to one or both of these traumas.”
Speaking to the National Sheriffs' Association Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said that "it is important to note that these minors are very well taken care of — don’t believe the press. They are very well taken care of.”
Maybe so, but for children and adolescents forced separation is still psychological damaging, whatever the physical circumstances of the facility where they are housed.
“No amount of colorful rooms with lots of great toys, regular meals, and health and education services takes away the psychological impact of losing your parents,” said Zayas, the dean of UT Austin’s School of Social Work. “The damage that will be done will last a lifetime.”After visiting a shelter in Texas, the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Colleen Kraft, in a television interview, likened what she saw to abuse.
"It is a form of child abuse," Kraft told CBS News. "This type of trauma can be long-lasting, and it's difficult to recover from this. We know very young children go on to not develop their speech, not develop their language, not develop their gross and fine motor skills and wind up with developmental delays."The Trump administration claims that the repurposed box stores and makeshift facilities now holding the migrant children separated from their parents are air-conditioned, with lessons and sports to divert the mind and body, safe beds to sleep in, and regular meals. Even if that’s true, experts say, to the children confined inside, it can feel like prison.
“Detention of any kind—especially when separated from primary caretakers—will exacerbate symptoms, increasing the severity of trauma-related symptoms, depression, and anxiety,” says Jodi Berger Cardoso of the University of Houston. “Children become hopeless and shut down from the stress. During this time, they need their primary caretaker to help reassure them that they are safe and loved. This cannot be done by strangers, no matter the quality of the facility.”
There’s a reason social workers are loathed to take children away from their parents unless it really is a matter of life and death: Study after study has found that children who are removed do no better than those who are left at home, even in terrible circumstances. One explanation is that any positive benefits of removal are outweighed by the serious trauma caused by separation.
“We do not want to separate children from their parents,” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions Monday at the same event where Nielsen spoke. “But we do have a policy of prosecuting adults who flout our laws to come here illegally.”
But the fact that there is a legitimate political debate over the rule of law and the morality of breaking up families doesn’t negate the poisonous legacy of policies that pull families apart – policies like slavery, the forced assimilation of Native American and Australian aboriginal children, and the separation of parent and child on the southern border – different in scale, but not in effect on individual children.
“Even a week in detention, under circumstances like the ones we’re seeing in immigration enforcement, can be devastating,” says Zayas. “Young children’s incapacity to understand time makes 50 days equal to 50 months, they simply cannot grasp it. Just look at how children view a school day of six hours or even a visit to some boring relatives’ home, as an eternity.”
The feeling of loss is so profound that it can trigger serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia, or cause what psychologists call dissociation – the sense of being an observer over your own body - a dangerous mental rupture that can lead to serious problems including multiple personality disorders.
“Daily life for children becomes very difficult. Getting up, going to school, taking care of themselves, feels like impossible tasks,” says the University of Houston’s Berger Cardozo, who has done extensive research on detained migrant children. “Like anyone who is in a heightened state of fear and isolation, it triggers fight or flight responses in our body. Children may try to fight through their emotions but eventually, their bodies and minds will be overwhelmed with the stress and they will begin to shut down.”
“Whether its drug abuse or crime or deviations and perversities or mental health problems or inability to function in society or suicide, the damage will take its course,” says Zayas. “Long-term psychological problems emerge and chronic illnesses appear in early adulthood that plague the person for the rest of their lives. Their lives are shortened.”
Even if they do understand that the parent is alive and that they will likely be reunited after the process works itself out, it can still feel to a child like a parent had gone forever, Zayas worries that the worst fears of the children may come true.
In May, the Department of Health and Human Services, which is responsible for the children’s wellbeing and reunification, told Congress that it had lost track of 1,475 children who had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border alone and were then placed with U.S. sponsors in 2017.
“These children will live in hope of reuniting but mostly they will be forgotten,” says Zayas. “Considering the vast numbers of children in over 14 states, the government and contract agencies will surely lose records, fail to keep track of parents’ whereabouts, and fail to reunite children with their parents.”

Pete Davidson talks about his engagement to Ariana Grande on “The Tonight Show”
Pete Davidson was on The Tonight Show last night. His first TV appearance since the news broke that he and pop singer Ariana Grande were engaged. While the SNL star was on the show to promote his new Netflix movie, Set It Up that was obviously not the question everyone had on the top of their minds. Davidson stated that being engaged was “F*ckin’ Lit” and compared it to when Derek Jeter retired and Nike ran commercials with everyone tipping their hat to him as he walked down the street. He also managed to make the interview about the other guest, Robert Pattinson as he expressed his love for a movie Pattinson starred in, going as far as introducing a clip from the 2 year old movie.
Trump rips ‘Fake News’ for reports of concessions to North Korea
President Trump on Sunday took aim at the media for its critical coverage of his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
"Funny how the Fake News, in a coordinated effort with each other, likes to say I gave sooo much to North Korea because I 'met,'" Trump tweeted.
"That's because that's all they have to disparage! We got so much for peace in the world, & more is being added in finals. Even got our hostages/remains!" he added.

Japan Earthquake: Death Toll Rises in the Wake of 6.1 Tremor Near Osaka
A powerful earthquake struck the region around Osaka, the second largest city in Japan, killing at least four people and injuring hundreds of others. The quake was measured at a magnitude 6.1 and destroyed gas and water lines, setting off fires and water service disruptions in the area as well.
The massive tremors also meant that flights in and out of airports in Osaka have been canceled as well. Even while bullet trains and most of the local trains have resumed operation by Monday evening, the earthquake has also paralyzed traffic and commuter lines, forcing desperate commuters to try to walk home instead

At least four people killed during the quake have been confirmed as of this time, including a 9-year-old girl who was killed by a collapsing wall at her school. Rina Miyake was walking nearby when the quake collapsed the concrete wall surrounding the swimming pool of the school.
An elderly man in his 80s was killed by another collapsing wall as well, while an 85-year old man also died from getting pinned under a bookcase at their home in nearby Ibaraki, according to the national news network NHK via BBC.
Takatsuki City confirmed another victim by late Monday, bringing the quake's death toll up to four. Early reports went about an 81-year-old woman who was found dead underneath a fallen wardrobe in her home.
The strong earthquake sent tremors to nearby Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo and Shiga prefectures as well. Japan's meteorological agency also warned there could be another big earthquake in the coming days, and with many homes and buildings in the area getting cut off from water, power and gas, defense troops have been sent to join rescue and relief operations in parts of Osaka.
Warnings have also been issued about the continuing rains that might make landslides a danger over the next few days.
Dowty Propellers planning Gloucester return
Aircraft firm Dowty Propellers has announced its intention to build a new base in Gloucestershire.
The company aims to set up at Gloucester Business Park in Brockworth after a fire destroyed its headquarters in Staverton in 2015.
Since then its 380 employees have been based at temporary sites around the county.
World-class propellers for planes such as the Hurricane and Spitfire were built at Staverton for nearly 80 years.
The move comes as Airbus has warned it could leave the UK if the country exits the European Union single market and customs union without a transition deal.
Welcoming Dowty's intentions to stay in Gloucester, Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson said: "It's very important; the company could have gone to America but has chosen to stay in the UK, Brexit or not."
He added: "I don't think Brexit needs to kick us; it's in the European Union's interest to do a deal with us."
Aviation journalist Julian Bray said the fire had allowed Dowty to introduce new equipment more quicklyPhilippe Coutinho and Neymar bailed Brazil out with stoppage-time strikes against Costa Rica following another uninspiring display at the 2018 World Cup.
And with seconds remaining Neymar, the world's most expensive player, tapped in Douglas Costa's cross to secure Brazil's first win of the tournament.
Their hopes of victory looked to have been dashed when they had a penalty decision overturned by VAR in the 78th minute after referee Bjorn Kuipers had initially ruled Neymar had been brought down in the area.
As it stands Brazil currently lead Group E and could go through with a draw in their final pool match against Serbia.
Didcot landfill fire out after 17 hours
A large fire at a landfill site in Oxfordshire has ended, 17 hours after it began.
Crews were called to the site at Appleford, near Didcot, at about 16:30 BST on Thursday.
Residents described a "horrid" smell emanating from the site and said smoke could be seen for miles.
The fire and rescue service said crews left the scene at 09:40 on Friday but, according to the Met Office, smoke was still reducing visibility.
One resident, who took a picture of the smoke from the nearby Ladygrove estate in Didcot at around 22:00 on Thursday, said there was a very strong smell of plastic.
